Merrick House offers adults the opportunity to prepare themselves for their high school equivalency test through the General Educational Development (GED) Program.
The Skills Improvement Program provides classes for adults who want to improve their English, math, and reading skills.
In anticipation of the 2014 transition of the GED test to a computer-based model, Merrick House has set up a four station computer lab in our GED classroom, and started integrating computer content with the traditional pen and paper lessons for the students. Aside from integrating class materials on the computer, computer literacy education has become part of the daily lessons in order for students to master the skills necessary to take a computer-based test.
Classes are free and everyone works at his or her own pace. It is not required that you attend both day sessions nor is it required to come everyday.
Orientations:
Orientations must be completed before students may begin classes. Orientations are held on the first two fridays of every month at 9:00 a.m. You must bring a valid photo ID with you. If you are under 18 years of age, you must have an official withdrawal form from school. During orientation a test is given that will evaluate areas in which help is needed. Late arrivals will have to reschedule for the following Friday on which orientation is scheduled.
Upcoming GED orientations:
***Due to Merrick House closing on Friday, May 10th, the GED orientation has been canceled for that date. Please call Maureen at 216.771.5077 to make arrangements if you had planned on coming to that orientation. ***
June 7th and 14th
July 5th and 12th
Orientations start at 9:00 a.m
It is important to finish your official GED before the end of December 2013. As of January 1, 2014, a new GED test will be in use that is:
- computer-based.
- in line with CORE Secondary Education Standards.
Any incomplete or non-passing GED records currently on file, or starting from 2002, will be destroyed at that time.
Anyone with partial passing scores will be required to start from the beginning again.
