Introducing Our New Executive Director

May 12, 2021

Dear Members of the Merrick House Community,

The Board of Trustees of Merrick House is excited and proud to announce the appointment of Harriet Hadley as our new Executive Director beginning on May 24, 2021.

Harriet brings extensive skills in planning, management, social service and community development. She is leaving her current position as Business Community Liaison at the Cleveland Job Corps Center and, prior to that, she was with Scranton Road Ministries as the program director.

Harriet is the Chair of the Financial Stability Committee of the United Way of Greater Cleveland. She is affiliated with several groups, including the Rotary Club of Cleveland, Greater Cleveland Partnership, and the National Congress of Black Women. She also serves on the Board of Directors of Greater Collinwood Development Corporation and was appointed by the Mayor of Cleveland to the Community Police Commission with the Cleveland consent decree. Harriet received her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Business Management from Indiana Wesleyan University.

Harriet’s passion for community, dedication to families and youth, and her experience and background will truly benefit those served by Merrick House. We are confident that we have the right leader who will ensure that Merrick House continues to serve as a bedrock organization in our community. We know that Harriet’s leadership will take us to new heights of success as we serve our mission and pursue our vision.

Best Regards,

Megan Meister Spencer

OUR THRIVING NEIGHBORHOOD CENTER IN CLEVELAND SERVES PEOPLE IN THE HISTORIC TREMONT AREA AND BEYOND

The Tremont neighborhood of Cleveland is rich in history, culture, and tradition. Merrick House is an integral part of this diverse and resilient community, welcoming people to our neighborhood center and empowering them to get ahead and reach success through our on-site and outreach programs.

Originally built as a settlement house in the early 1900s, Merrick House honors its legacy to create an interconnected community of support. From infant child care, preschool, and youth mentoring to adult education and recreation, we are continually reshaping our programs and services to meet the needs of residents in the Tremont, Clark-Fulton, Stockyards, and Brooklyn Centre neighborhoods. With the recent addition of our “MomsFirst” program, we are able to provide health education and support to pregnant women with the ultimate goal of helping them have a healthy baby in a county that ranks among the nation’s highest for infant mortality rates.

Our inclusive and adaptable approach over the years has helped to stabilize families, educate children, create leaders, and provide safe and healthy activities. We are proud to be a MyCom partner, a network of people in Greater Cleveland who believe youth development is the responsibility of all sectors of society. By engaging our youth, connecting them with caring and committed adults, and providing a variety of “out of school time” activities, we are helping them reach their full potential and become good citizens.

Wherever possible, Merrick House advocates for fairness and equality and works with residents to give them a stronger voice on various issues they are facing. We are actively creating change and making a positive impact in our neighborhoods.

Merrick House is committed to Lifting Lives and Strengthening Communities.
